People in Great Yarmouth are being given the chance to help create history and be part of a royal project.

The Right Royal Remini-scence exhibition, which began yesterday at the Time and Tide museum, runs until November 11.

The museum has been transformed into a seaside resort with one wall dedicated to a large print of Great Yarmouth beach in the 1950s.

A beach hut containing artefacts such as a dance card and a commemorative coin from the Golden Jubilee is on display and people can take a seat on a striped deckchair to speak to a volunteer and share their memories of royal events gone by and their plans to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Curator Jo O'Donoghue said: 'We want people to share their royal memories – from the silver and golden jubilees, the coronation and the royal wedding. We have a contemporary collection policy. The project is about celebrating and remembering the past and gathering for the future and we want to involve as many people as we can.'

A collection of 1950s fashion is displayed in the centre of the room which includes dresses, gloves, jewellery, shoes and scraps of velvet from the Queen's coronation robe.

Volunteers will be armed with flash microphones to record memories.

Sue Davies, who has been volunteering at the museum for five years, said: 'I feel honoured to do this. We record the interviews and then they are edited and put on listening posts. The way people react when they share their memories is wonderful. It's important that we record memories. I wish I had asked my parents about their lives.'

Also part of the exhibition is a banner from St Nicholas Priory School showing hockey, swimming and the activities they were involved with back in 1953.
