THE future use options for the 800-year-old St Margaret's Church ruins in Hopton will be discussed by the group overseeing the site's regeneration.

The next meeting of the Coast Road church's committee is on January 16 when members will be discussing a number of ideas, including the creation of an open air 200-seater theatre and facilities for themed fairs, art and craft exhibitions and weddings.

Project leader Brian Howard said the first idea would involve an open performance area being created with seating that could be used during the summer months, while an alternative indoor venue would be sought for drama displays during the winter.

The committee is also set to apply for a 300,000 English Heritage grant to enable the ruins to be stabilised, while a further application for a 5,000 grant for the project has been sent to recycling organisation WREN.

An appeal has been made for funding through the project's website, www.oldstmargarets.com while a race night will be held at the Cliff Hotel in Gorleston to raise funds on February 12, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost 10

Friday marks the 145th anniversary of the church burning down.

The ruins have been a long running issue due to protracted negotiations over the purchase of the site which the parish council eventually bought for 1 from the Church of England in May.
