Norfolk County Council has awarded its new high quality PE charter mark to the schools to highlight its commitment to school sport and to encourage schools to deliver the recommended minimum of two hours a week of high quality PE.

Currently 88pc of young people in the county receive the recommended minimum.

The schools presented with awards at County Hall on Friday, included Brundall Primary School and Freethorpe Primary School.

To gain the award, schools have to ensure that pupils understand what they are trying to achieve through PE, enjoy their lessons and want to improve their knowledge and skills in PE. The award lasts for two years and successful schools are able to display a plaque.

The awards ceremony also saw 30 teaching assistants presented with awards for developing their teaching skills in PE.

Debbie Glover, from Fleggburgh Primary School, received the outstanding candidate of 2009 award for achieving outstanding grades in all of her observed lessons during the course, delivered by the council.
