A SPECIAL seaside themed event is taking place at a Gorleston care home to support residents with dementia and their families.

The fun day is being held on Sunday, September 27 at Magdalen House in Gorleston. Activities will include beach games and a raffle, beach style refreshments such as candy floss, ice cream and hot dogs will also be served.

The event is part of a two year friends and family reunited project funded by a £20,000 Mental Health Foundation grant.

The aim is to bring friends and family together to support their loved ones who are living with dementia.

More and more people in Norfolk are being affected by dementia with approximately 13,500 people in the county living with the condition last year, a figure set to reach 25,000 by 2025.

Cabinet Member for adult social services David Harwood said: "Dementia can be a condition which leaves people feeling very isolated and alone. This project is about involving family and friends with the care of their loved one. Not only does this help create a strong sense of community at our homes but it gives a real boost to our residents with the condition.

"Norfolk County Council is working hard to meet the challenges presented to us by an aging population and we have long-term plans in place which will help make life more comfortable for those with this condition as well as their friends and family.”

More information about dementia can be found in the Finding Your Way leaflet, available online at: www.norfolk.gov.uk/consumption/groups/public/documents/article/ncc043350.pdf or contact Adult Social Services on 0344 800 8014.
