Second amnesty for recycling hazardous waste

After having to close earlier than planned due to high demand, the county council is to run additional household hazardous waste amnesty events at Caister Recycling Centre over the weekend October 4 and 5.
Residents will be able to take their hazardous waste to the sites throughout the day, from 9am to 4pm, giving those who were turned away or who missed the previous event earlier this month, a chance to dispose of these materials.
On an average weekend day, Caister sees around 375 vehicles, but on September 6 and 7, nearly triple that number took advantage of the amnesty.
Wood preservatives, bug and weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products are among the wide range of household chemicals that are accepted, for free.
These are products deemed too dangerous to be tipped down drains or sent to landfill without damaging the environment.
Rachel Stewart, Waste Reduction Officer at Norfolk County Council said: “We put these events on as a convenient way for residents to get rid of household chemicals, but most of us can do more to try to reduce the amount we end up with.”
The council recommends that if people are planning to bring hazardous products to an amnesty event they should keep all products in their original containers and not mix them together, keep containers clearly labelled where possible, and make sure the products are properly sealed to avoid leakage.

However, the following products will not be accepted at the amnesty: asbestos; commercial hazardous waste; ammunition, explosives or marine flares; fireworks; and petrol.
