TWO of Great Yarmouth's Air Training Corps senior cadets, Sgt Danielle Breacker and Sgt Sam Garbutt, have achieved their Silver Glider Pilot's Wings after successfully completing the ATC gliding scholarship course.
It culminated in each of them flying a solo take-off, circuit and landing. Their course was undertaken at weekends from last September at the No 611 Volunteer Gliding School based at Watton airfield. The cadets each undertook approximately 50 winched launches and totalled about 5hr and 30mins flying over the period of the course. They were required also to provide groundcrew support for other cadets and staff flying in the same period. Their solo flights were flown in mid December after poor weather had delayed earlier completion of the course.
No 221, Great Yarmouth Sqaudron has further good news this week as the Oulton Broad firm of chartered accountants, Lovewell Blake, has made a generous donation of computers which became surplus to its requirements as office equipment was upgraded.
The PCs will be used for training and administrative purposes, bringing new capabilities to both instructors and cadets alike.
Retired RAF Flt Lt Peter Keeble, a civilian instructor at the Squadron, said: “Funding for units such as 221 Sqaudron is always a struggle and is undertaken in large part by our civilian committee of volunteers. A donation of the kind made by Lovewell Blake is invaluable in our striving to keep up to date with our teaching methods, something the cadets naturally expect of us”.
As part of future projects Mr Keeble intends to establish a flight simulator network for cadets to experience and learn flying and air traffic control procedures.
