TRAFFIC counters are testing the level of compliance with speed limits along the busy Caister to Yarmouth road.

The sensor strips are able to accurately track the model and speed of vehicles travelling towards the town and - crucially - whether they are switching down from 40mph to 30mph.

Neville Calder, casualty reduction team manager at Norfolk County Council, said the action had been prompted by residents who said cars were speeding along the 30mph stretch, making it difficult to edge out of their drives and posing a danger.

He said the results would prove the level of compliance and whether there was any mileage in moving speed limit signs which were lost in the clutter of so many others. Moving the speed camera was also a possibility.

Mr Calder added that the 40mph stretch was well complied with and that although evidence from the mobile camera unit suggested the 30mph stretch was as well, the results of the traffic count would reveal more.

Tom Garrod, whose county council ward includes the area, said he was keeping a close eye on developments.
