THE first stage of building much-needed sheltered homes for people with mental health problems from Great Yarmouth took place this week. NHS Yarmouth and Waveney announced that it wanted to sell a brownfield site off Estcourt Road to a developer keen to turn it into housing to meet a shortfall in provision of specialist accommodation in the borough.

NHS Yarmouth and Waveney announced that it wanted to sell a brownfield site off Estcourt Road to a developer keen to turn it into housing to meet a shortfall in provision of specialist accommodation in the borough.
The plot of nearly an acre of surplus land was previously the site of the former isolation ward at Northgate Hospital.
The ward closed in the 1960s.
In 2006, plans to build a �10m office block housing 500 public sector workers and a medical drop-in centre on part of the land were dropped because of the reorgan-isation of primary care trusts.
If approved, the latest suggested development would be used by vulnerable people who have been discharged from hospitals or other care sites.
A public display about the proposed development can be seen on Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm at Yarmouth High School, in Salisbury Road.
