An historic town centre pub can be turned into a shop and flats, planners say.
The Two-Necked Swan on Great Yarmouth’s Market Place can trace its history serving thirsty locals back to the 18th century.But having been closed for more than ten years, its upper floors derelict, planners have ruled the town can lose one more watering hole.
In its decision notice borough council planners said bringing the upper floors back into use with a commercial offer on the ground floor would be better than an empty pub that had been shut for more than a decade.
It added there were several other pubs in the area and that the vibrancy of the town’s evening offer would not be affected.
Because the pub is Grade II-listed there are restrictions to do with materials and alterations.
There were some concerns raised about the loss of a pub and talk of making it an asset of community value although no application was submitted.
