A MULTI-million pound extension to Market Gates Shopping Centre which has sparked the comeback of retail giants Debenhams to Great Yarmouth has entered its final stage.

Town centre bosses believe the £16m extension will deter shoppers usually headed for the malls in Norwich to Yarmouth's town centre as well as attract further big names to the town.

Debenhams opens its 27,500sq ft store to the public on October 31 while coffee house Starbucks will open mid November.

The toilets at Market Gates have been closed until the end of October to allow the final phase of the extension and refurbishment of the car park to be completed.

Centre manager Nick Spencer said: “We are now well into the extension work at Market Gates and the closure of the toilets mark the beginning of the final stages of work. We are now around six weeks away to the opening of the extension and work is on schedule. We are always loathe to cause any inconvenience to our customers but the end result of more shopping and improved facilities will make up for it.”

The closest toilets to Market Gates for customers to use are the public toilets located under the shopping centre near the old town wall. The car park refurbishment works are almost complete and the new look car park with pay on foot machines will be open at the beginning of October.
