When it comes to highlighting patterns of landscape there's nothing to match aerial photography especially when it's being carried out by a master of the art.

Mike Page's spectacular wintry wonderland makes the point perfectly. Taken during a flight over the low lying flatlands of the marshes between Acle and Yarmouth on the coast it reveals not only the meandering course of the River Bure, in stark contrast to the parallel lines of the railway and the A47 Acle Straight, but the intricate network of channels and watercourses which serve to drain this potentially boggy stretch of countryside.

The picture features among views brought together in Norfolk From the Air A-Z Mike Page's collaboration with Pauline Young which has been literally flying off the bookshelves in the past few weeks.

Originally a toll road, the Acle New Road (well, it was new in 1831!) links the Midlands to the sea at Yarmouth and its many bumps and humps reflect the difficulties in trying to build a road across marshy ground.
