SOMERLEYTON Estate has unveiled a fearsome sculpture at Fritton Country Park.

The 12ft Viking statue, which stands guard outside the visitor centre, was commissioned in 2007 to commemorate the Viking heritage of the village of Fritton.

The statue has been created by wood sculptor Mike Thody who also created the big friendly giant at Holt Country Park.

The monument forms a focal point in the park particularly for children's activities and as well as an enormous axe, also leans on a signpost to help visitors find their way around.

A competition is being held to name the fearsome warrior.

Fritton Lake is asking local schools to come up with a name for him, based on his Viking heritage, and an accompanying picture. A prize of a 2008 season ticket entry to the park for the winning school and for the winning entry will be awarded. The best drawings and pictures of the statue will be displayed at the entrance to the Lake.

Entries should be sent to Statue Competition, Fritton Lake, Beccles Road, Fritton, Norfolk NR31 9AB.

The winning entry will be drawn at the Halloween event at Fritton Lake, during autumn half term. The closing date for entries is October 14.
