Special events and street parties mark first ever Norfolk Day

The east coast of the county jumped into Norfolk Day, celebrating it with special events across the region.

At Hemsby, the day kicked off with family fun at Richardson’s Hemsby Beach Holiday Park, with miniature ship building at the Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth, a street party in Acle, and bell ringing in South Walsham adding to the day’s excitement.
Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Mary Coleman, said Norfolk Day has helped people rediscover the gems the county has to offer.
Alongside tea and scones at St George’s Theatre cafe bar over lunchtime, Mrs Coleman also attended fetes and a mental health event, and praised the diversity of the events on offer.
She said: “It has been a really varied collection of things that people are doing and it has been extremely successful. We had a wonderful day promoting Norfolk Day last week and I have been looking around at the events going on and I think it has really taken off.”

She added: “I can see that it is something that should continue each year because Norfolk is such a fantastic place.
“Last week we visited places I have been before and everyone was saying we must come back as we had forgotten they were there.

“Each generation discovers these things and we need to keep promoting Norfolk.”
Visitors at Richardson’s holiday park in Hemsby were greeted with a free sample of chips, a demonstration of some of the park’s new activities, and music from the one and only Chico.

Adam Yardley, head of sales and customer experience, said: “It has gone really well. We have had a number of people who have come to the holiday park to try out our fantastic Go Active activities like archery, and the new climbing wall that we have added for this season.
“We have also had Chico performing today. It is a busy day anyway in the peak season but we have seen some good turn out as well from local people and it has been a chance for us to celebrate Norfolk and what makes our county that we work, live and play in so wonderful.”
He added: “It would be a shame not to celebrate our county so it would be fantastic for us to do Norfolk Day again next year.”
