Great Yarmouth town centre will get a spring clean ahead of a £1m investment.
Staff from the borough council and GYB Services Ltd will undertake an “enchanced clean” next weekend; removing weeds and litter, sweeping the roads and jet-washing the alleyways on March 21, part of a national initiative to spruce up the UK’s high streets, villages and parks.
The Community Clear Up Day will also mark the start of the 2015 spring/summer tourism season.
Residents and local businesses are being invited to get involved by signing up to take part in litter picks on the day.
The spring clean will also celebrate the start of a new £1m initiative to boost Yarmouth town, an investment which was agreed by full council last month in response to the Transformation Consultation, which identified as top public priorities the town centre and street cleaning and area/grounds maintenance.
The enhanced clean will include jet-washing of The Rows, and access alleyways into the town centre, and a complete sweep of all main roads, side roads and the Market Place.
In addition, the borough council’s waste and recycling communications officers will have a marquee in the Market Place.
Jonathan Newman, town centre manager, said: “We will be encouraging our members to participate in the initiative as they themselves prepare for business on March 21 by giving the areas around their premises extra attention.”
Nick Spencer, manager of Market Gates Shopping Centre, added: “It’s important that the town centre is seen in the best condition where possible to improve the offer for both residents and visitors alike.
“This is a good starting point as a catalyst for the £1m project of improvements to enhance our town centre.”
Litter picks will take place on March 21, at:
•10.30am to 12.30pm – St Nicholas Park (South Beach Parade)
•11.30am to 1pm – Cobholm – meeting at the playground/skate park by Cobholm Primary School
•12.30pm to 2pm – Crow Hall Green Park, Gorleston – meeting at the community centre
Anyone interested in getting involved should first register an interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01493 846478.
A litter-pick will also take place at Caister from 10am to 2pm. Anyone interested in taking part should register an interest by emailing email@example.com
