As World Cup fever grips the nation peculiar patriotic paintings have started doing the rounds on Great Yarmouth’s roads.
The curious craze kicked off in the build up to England’s opening game against Tunisia when a roundabout in Brasenose Avenue in Gorleston was emblazoned with the St George’s flag.
Since then, people across the borough have been flagging up the paintings, which appear on roundabouts across Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Bradwell and Belton.
Caister also joined the club after the roundabout on the High Street was painted.
As well as prompting people to ask who transformed the roundabouts into a tribute to Harry Kane and his teammates, the football-themed makeovers drew praise on social media and also tacit support from Norfolk County Council, which is responsible for roads.
A county council spokesman said: “We don’t usually condone unauthorised alterations to roundabouts, but we’re in no hurry to remove this particular example until after the World Cup.”
Caister Parish councillor Kevin Wood declared the village’s new look roundabout as “Caister’s very own England traffic island”.
Mr Wood said the painting had been well received by the community and many people had taken to social media to show their support for the England roundabouts.
Craig Randall said: “These are great! We should keep them this way.”
Stuart Brown said: “I think it’s great let’s hope we see lots more. Whoever you are, keep up the good work.”
Hayley Farman said: “I think they’re awesome and I hope to see many more.”
Shareen Ellis said: “I think it’s amazing, definitely some team spirit there. Good to see so many people are behind our boys.”
However, the message of was not clear to all road-users.
Hannah Lucy Allen said: “I honestly thought these were signs to say not to drive onto the white circle.”
But just as Gareth Southgate puzzles over his team selection for the Three Lions’ next fixture, Great Yarmouth has been left guessing just who exactly is the mysterious marker.
Writing on Facebook, Christina Ross said: “I think there are plenty of people wanting to buy the culprit a beer.”
