ST Nicholas Priory Junior School have twinned with a school in Zimbabwe, St Jude's Primary School which is 50km north east of Harare through the charity, Smile International.
The school buildings, desks and chairs are in an advanced state of disrepair with cracks in the floors and walls, broken or missing windows and roof beams that have been attacked by termites, leaving them very unsafe. The children have very limited resources and only have one maths text book between 15 pupils.
Priory School has always been very generous in its support of those less fortunate than themselves and this link with St Jude's gives the school a chance to focus their charity giving to a school, its staff and pupils.
Pupils at Priory have received letters from pupils at St Jude's and have seen a DVD about the school and they have been busy sending replies back.
In order to raise funds for St Jude's, pupils and staff were asked to donate 50p instead of bringing in tins for harvest, staff were asked to donate a contribution to the fund instead of sending Christmas cards to each other and the school have been selling packs of Christmas cards which were designed by Priory pupils.
Year 5 pupils made and sold newspapers as part of Literacy Challenge Week and raised £20. So far the school has raised £500 which will be sent to St Jude's through Smile International. The school has also sent equipment no longer needed at Priory to the charity.
