IT may have been made on a shoestring but there are no shortage of thrills and spills in a gangster movie shot on the east coast.

Made by first time director Paul Easter, Stagger is due to be released on DVD later this year.

Professional actor Paul defied the odds to make the movie, which was partly filmed in Great Yarmouth.

Paul, who lives near Beccles, was spurred into shooting the movie after becoming frustrated at having to travel to London to audition for often minor roles.

He was also thwarted in his bid to win funding for the drama, which focuses on the clash between rival gangs organising the local rave scene.

However, Paul, who plays the role of gang leader Jake, refused to be deterred, making the film on tight budget with a talented cast of largely amateur actors.

He said: “It was difficult for me to get financial backing as I did not go to drama school so funding organisations did not want to risk investing.

“There is no substitute for experience though and I really enjoyed the film making process.

“All the cast are really talented and enthusiastic and we formed a very close bond.

“My character gets stronger and stronger throughout the film so I sort of found my feet with him."

Stagger is due to be released in October and Paul is also hopeful of signing a deal with an American distributor.

Inspired by his experience Paul is now directing his next movie, a horror flick called Collateral Consequences.

Several of the cast of Stagger will be appearing in the movie, which is also being shot locally.

The 43 year old plays the role of Zane a crook who sells some land to a group of migrant workers with unexpectedly gory consequences.

“I don't want to give the ending away, but there are lots of twists and turns and a shocking conclusion,” said Paul. “It is a pretty sinister plot and very gruesome - I really enjoy playing bad guys even though I get my comeuppance in the end.”
