Stalham Infant School's year 1 “squirrels” enjoyed a morning collecting acorns from an English oak tree overlooking the school grounds. They were taking part in the second year of a project with Stalham's community woodland group, Canopy, and the woodland charity Greenlight Trust.

Sarah Moore, from Green Light Trust, told the children a very personal story about an acorn she planted as a child with her dearly loved Grandad. The acorn has now grown into a beautiful oak tree which is just reaching its full height. Sarah said “I hope my tree story showed the children how they can make a difference to their environment from a very small start”.

Children planted acorns in a special tree nursery in the school grounds which they will later transplant to a permanent woodland home.

Canopy hope to secure land within walking distance of the town centre to establish a community-owned woodland.
