TAKE One Picture, is a children's exhibition with a difference, and youngsters from Stalham Junior School have been displaying their artistic skills all week.

The theme was inspired by Renoir's The Umbrellas, painted in 1883.

Head teacher Mike Beames and art teacher Sara Ward attended a conference last November and came away with the idea of devoting a whole week to the art project.

Mr Beames said: “We decided to turn the entire school over to the project for a whole week and so far the response from the children has been very encouraging.”

There were 20 workshops and all the children, aged between seven and 11, were able to make other things out of umbrella material, also using pottery, felting or paint. Some children made a large jigsaw with an umbrella theme that will be used in the playground during the summer months.”

All 12 teaching staff have become involved together with local artists.

Mr Beames added: “The school curriculum is driven by English and Mathematics but I believe there is room to widen it and incorporate music, dance and art. This week incorporates all of those disciplines.”

And two youngsters were clearly enjoying the “art attack”: Holly Moore said: “I like the painting best, because I like to get messy!” and April Burton added: “I like the sewing best, it is something I do with my dad at home.”

There will be an arts and craft weekend where much of the children's work will be displayed at the school over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29.
