A Great Yarmouth superstore handed over £1,000 and made a bumper food donation to help ensure families in need get a Christmas dinner.

The contributions by Tesco have been made to Yarmouth foodbank and drop-in centres, a partnership between the Salvation Army, Tolhouse Street, (Herbies), Gorleston Baptist Church, Lowestoft Road (The Well) and St Mary Magdalene Church, Magdalen Square, Gorleston (The Bridge).

Hayley Cook, community champion from the Tesco Extra on Pasteur Road, handed over the money in Tesco gift cards, along with 500 tins of food to foodbank volunteers at Gorleston Baptist Church.

The gift cards will cover the cost of festive lunches at all three drop-in centres, as well as a Christmas Day lunch at The Bridge.

The foodbank and attached drop-ins already receive food items from Tesco on a weekly basis as part of the national Tesco Community Food Connection with FareShare FoodCloud.

Trish Slade from the foodbank said: “These latest donations of tinned products will contribute to the 6,000 boxes of food we are set to distribute to those at risk from food poverty this year.”
