Support groups can provide a listening ear and help others

The days are getting shorter but there’s plenty of activities going on round the borough if you want to join in. From table tennis or arts and crafts to reading, self-help groups, drumming, getting/keeping fit or volunteering – the choice is yours.
If you enjoy crafts there is the Martham Craft Club, they meet on Wednesdays from 10am to 12.30pm at the village hall; contact Chris Sheppard on 01493 740752. At Great Yarmouth library there is a needlecraft group on Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm and then a Knit and Natter group from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Contact the library on 01493 844551. The NNAB run “Crafts made accessible” at their venue 12 Hall Quay. These are for visually impaired people and on a Friday from 10am to noon, contact 01493 745973.

GY Bipolar UK Self Help group meets last Monday of the month 6.30pm to 8.30pm, call 03333 233880.
GY Parkinson’s Support Group meets second Wednesday monthly 2.30pm to 430pm,call 01493 855144.
Carers Trust Norfolk meets every Wednesday 11am to 3pm, call 01493 441222.

I recently picked up a copy of Oddfellows Times, there were a number of interesting articles in there including “Over 55’s flock to social networks”. This stated that in 2010 only one in 10 of those in the 55-64 age group had a smartphone and today that has increased to six out of 10 - and four out of 10 are 65–74 year olds.
If you do not have a smartphone or a computer I expect you get frustrated by references to download information. If you would like to learn to use a computer there are a number of places locally where you can do that – The Priory Centre or your local library amongst others. Call in to find out more.
Another article in there was “Support for mental health problems”- it said “Asking for help is a really important step towards getting help and staying well but it can be hard to know where to turn to. The best way to start is by talking to your GP. It can be hard to know what to say, especially for people who are not feeling well - try to be honest and open when describing feelings. Don’t worry that the problem is too small or unimportant, your GP is there to give that support”.
