A GREAT Yarmouth woman is off on her dream travel trip - to a teaching post in southern India.
And Sandra Sullivan, 37, is thrilled with the chance to work in a deprived area teaching art, PE, music and literacy.
Sandra, a teacher from Greenacre First, Middle and Nursery School, saw a story in the Advertiser a couple, of months ago advertising for teachers in deprived areas of India. She followed it up and was selected to go to Bangalore in August.
The scheme known as Travelling to Teach, is a summer placement programme for teachers in this country to assist in some of the world's poorer regions during the school's summer holidays.
It is organised by a company named GapGuru and now Sandra needs to raise £2,000 in the next two months and is confident she will achieve it with local fund raising activities planned.
Sandra, who lives in Southtown, said: “I will be teaching at a school with pupils aged between four and 14. It is going to be quite a challenge. The teachers at the school will help translate during the lessons.
“I teach art, PE, music and literacy so I will be kept quite busy.”
She will be staying with an Indian host family for three weeks from August 8 to 30 and felt this would help her in understanding more of Indian culture.
GapGuru has previously encouraged gap year students to undertake some assignments during their gap year but Sandra said there was a need for qualified teachers to help out in the urban areas.
Sandra, whose husband Richard is fully supportive of her trip, said: “They do need people with experience. Travelling to Teach is working with a number of charity schools in both Bangalore and Chennai .
“It will provide education to children from some of the poorest backgrounds and they really need help and support. These schools work with limited resources and can greatly benefit from strong teaching skills.”
She will also have all weekends free and will be exploring the delights of southern India.
She added: “It will be such an experience and I think I will also benefit from the temporary post.”
