WELSH teenager Jarrad Breen, became the youngest player to win a game in the World Indoor Singles Championship when he upset Englishman Robert Chisholm in the opening match at Potters Leisure Resort.

Clearly undaunted by his maiden appearance at the established home of international indoor bowls, the 17-year-old qualifier from Mid Glamorgan took an early lead - but Chisholm, the world number 19 from Newcastle, fought back to hold a single-shot advantage going into the final end.

Breen held his nerve to tie the set - and then played a stunning final shot at the end of the second set to convert a double against him to a winning two shots to take the match 5-5, 9-5.

"I wasn't so nervous for most of the game, but I started shaking over the last two ends, because I realised I was in a position where I could win it," said the delighted youngster after his historic triumph over Chisholm, last year's surprise winner of the Welsh International Open.

"Four up with two to play is a good position to be in, but when I dropped a double on the penultimate end, I knew if Robert scored another two shots we'd be in a tiebreak - and I didn't want that.

"I watched Robert play in Swansea last year, and have played against him a few times in the junior international series - so I knew it would be hard game.

"I was really pleased with the way I played - but I wouldn't say it was my best ever. I remember playing in a Welsh international trial, and being told that I had earned full marks."

The fresh-faced Welshman must now wait until next Tuesday to take on England's third seed Mark Royal, the world number 2 from Stowmarket, for a place in the last 16.

The other singles clash on the WBT's famous blue portable rink at Potters saw England's Nick Brett make up for the disappointment of the previous day's World Pairs Championship loss with City of Ely club-mate Greg Harlow.

The lead changed three times in the first set of his match against English qualifier Stuart Airey before Brett broke away from five-all to take the set.

Carlisle-based Airey, a quarter-finalist in the 2005 championship, led 6-2 and 7-5 in the second set - but Brett, the world Number 20 from Peterborough in only his second appearance at Potters, recovered to tie the set to record an 8-5, 7-7 victory.

Defending champions Mervyn King and Kelvin Kerkow and former champions Billy Jackson and David Gourlay eased into the last eight of the World Pairs championship after straight sets victories over qualifying opposition.

Local hero King, the former world singles champion from Norfolk, and Aussie Kerkow beat Scots Andrew Barker and Michael Stepney 11-6, 8-7 while 2006 and 2007 champions Jackson and Gourlay overcame Welshmen John Price and David Axon 8-3, 8-6.

Earlier in the day, Ian McClure and Gary McCloy survived their second play-off encounter to earn a place in the first round. The Irish qualifiers beat Hong Kong pair Chris Chau and Kenny So 7-4, 11-7 and will now line up against English duo Mark Royal and Simon Skelton, the third seeds.
