GOING to the Prime Minister’s house for work experience might sound like a fanciful dream for most teenagers but that is exactly what one lucky Great Yarmouth youngster was able to do.

Gabbi Minas, 15, spent a week working at David Cameron’s country residence Chequers, set at the foot of the picturesque Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.

Gabbi, a pupil at Great Yarmouth VA High School, was delighted to learn that she would be given the opportunity to work in the kitchens of the exclusive home.

She said: “They don’t normally do work experience there so it was great that I had the chance to gain experience and learn some brilliant new skills.”

She was given the opportunity as a family member who worked there asked if it was possible and was grateful when they accepted.

The week’s placement was spent looking at the thought and effort that goes into fine dining as well as having the chance to prepare some cooking for important guests.

It was not all hard work though as Gabbi was lucky enough to meet Samantha Cameron on one occasion and even saw the Prime Minister when he visited the chefs.

She said: “He came into the kitchens and at first I didn’t realise it was him! He thanked us all for the work we were doing which was nice. It’s not what you typically get on work experience.”

She added: “Chequers is not like it is stereotyped. Everyone is really down-to-earth. There was never a dull moment working there, and I really enjoyed it and it was a great experience for me”.

Head chef Graham Howarth was so impressed by the excellent work that Gabbi had undertaken that she was asked to come back to help out at a big charity event being held by the Prime Minister in aid of a number of organisations including MIND. The event took all day to prepare for and raised over 700,000.

Speaking after the event Mr Howarth explained how Gabbi had made a brilliant impression on everyone at Chequers.

“She is a delightful, hard working individual with a great attitude and fantastic persona,” he said. “She engaged superbly with myself, my staff, and even the Prime Minister’s wife.”

He added that she should be very proud of the work she carried out.

“Miss Minas should be praised for being a credit both to her family and also to her school and it really was a pleasure having her with us for the duration of her placement,” he said.
