COUNCILLORS were pleased with the public's responses to an exhibition to launch Tesco plans to build a new superstore double the size of the existing outlet in Caister.

Caister parish councillor John Myatt told a council meeting on Monday 150 residents attended the exhibition at the village hall in November to find out more about the plans for the new 50,000sq ft supermarket and 1m village hall.

He said some of the visitors raised concerns about the possibility the new store could increase the risk of flooding in the area, but felt representatives from store developers Tamsland had been able to allay many of these fears.

“Frankly I think it was a good way of dealing with the plans by having the public exhibition and it was a good demonstration. I think it was hugely successful,” Cllr Myatt said.

Tamsland director Nick Wright joined parish councillors, including chairman Tony Overill and Tony Baker to show villagers the plans to build the timber clad building on an area of council-owned grassland on the other side of the access road to the current store.

The current car park will be extended to take the land occupied by the current Tesco which will be bulldozed to provide enough space for 350 cars, while the village's youth centre in Yarmouth Road will be demolished and replaced with the new village hall.

The entrance to the new store will face the access road, which will remain so customers travelling by car will have to cross the road to get to the supermarket.
