Pupils of The Dancers School in Gorleston took part in their Choreography Competition on Sunday in front of a small audience of family and friends.

The competition was judged by ex-pupil Natasha Lacey, who went on to become a professional dancer after leaving the school to train at Bird College in Kent.

Pupils were able to choreograph either a solo, duet or group piece of their choice, having total freedom to select their own theme, music and style of dance.

The competition was divided into two sections, junior and senior, with pupils entering solos, duets and trios in both categories. The junior section was won by Gracie Hacon, Sophia Leggett and Maisie Lloyd, and the senior section was won by Betsie Hacon, Evie Hacon and Paisley Webb.

All pupils who entered the competition have now also gained the opportunity to perform their pieces again, to a larger audience in the school’s show Snippet, which is taking place at the Gorleston Pavilion Theatre on June 10 at 2pm.

Principal Jayne King said: “Devising their own choreography is a great way for the pupils to develop their own ideas and creativity. They spend most of the time listening to instructions and working at technical development, so it is really good for them to have the opportunity to be free with their ideas and express their abilities in a different way.

“This is the first in-school competition we’ve done for a few years, and I was really impressed with the work that the competitors came up with – you could tell that they had all gone away and put plenty of thought and work into their pieces, which was lovely to see.”
