UP to a thousand people are expected to watch the biggest and most exciting catwalk show yet by fashion and textiles students in Great Yarmouth.

More than 30 original and innovative collections designed and created by students at Great Yarmouth College and its partner University Campus Suffolk Great Yarmouth will be modelled on the runway at the Ocean Room, Gorleston on Thursday.

Many of the unique garments have been made from scratch with students creating their own fabric by dying and weaving then creating their individual garments.

Other students have used the fashion team's 30,000 digital printer to produce their own textiles to craft into clothes.

For the first time this year a new anti-fashion collection of wearable art will be sent down the catwalk by art, design and photography students.

And among the collections will 14 bridal wear pieces designed and made by fashion lecturer Caroline Allison for her Professional Studies degree final collection.

Collections by this year's graduating foundation degree students from UCS Great Yarmouth have inspired by subjects as diverse as Grecian Goddesses, fantasy, Irish dance and cupcakes.

Mature student Heather Brown's niece and friend will dance an Irish gig down the catwalk in her collection in merino wool and silk.

Her jacket, inspired by the colours of a country meadow, started out as a plain pile of wool. She hand-dyed every yarn and then wove it on a loom to create the fabric to craft the fitted jacket.

She said: “I couldn't find the right colour dye to represent the green of a country meadow so I hand dyed it and then wove the fabric.”

Seventeen BTEC national diploma students will show collections inspired by Brazil, circuses, pink, London and drugs. One, Julie Simnett, has created a collection of knitted jewellery inspired by Moulin Rouge.
