Thumbs up for Age Concern GY Hemsby reunion

MORE than 500 over 50s descended on a Hemsby holiday village this week to prove that having fun is not just a youngsters’ game.

On Wednesday and yesterday, the Seacroft Holiday Village came alive to the sounds of music, laughter and bingo calls as Age Concern GY held its reunion.

The 63rd event of its kind, over the two days it brought together residents from across the borough for a range of entertainment, with 360 attending on the first day and 162 yesterday.

Bar manager Martin Gore has worked at the holiday camp for a decade, and said this year’s event was just as lively as previous get-togethers.

“They’re a good day out for all involved and prove it’s not just the younger ones who enjoy themselves. There was a great atmosphere and everyone’s there to enjoy themselves – they’ve paid their money and they want a good time.”

Things kicked off on Wednesday at 10am in the Starlight Ballroom, where an organist got the crowds moving on the large dance floor and working up an appetite for a roast beef and Yorkshire pudding lunch.

Afterwards, cabaret entertainer Olly Day drew chuckles and raised a few eyebrows with some risqu double entendres before moving on to show off his ventriloquism skills.

Then it was time for the Seacroft Holiday Village team to take over with a song and dance rock n’ roll show, ahead of the arrival of four versions of Elvis “The King”.

And once the crowd had recovered from multiple renditions, it was time to get serious with bingo.

Jackie Tierney, an older people’s development worker with Age Concern, pointed out another important element of the event.

“We had people explaining the digital switchover and the fire service letting those present know about their free homecheck service, which I think really helped ease some people’s worries.”

Yesterday’s event was due to follow the same schedule, except comedian Nigel “Boy” Sayer would be providing the post lunch entertainment.

Jackie added: “I’ve had a lot of feedback and everyone said they had a wonderful time. The food was brilliant, the entertainment was really good and it all went smoothly, and we would like to thank the Seacroft Holiday Village team for all their efforts.”
