Millions could be spent on transport improvements across Great Yarmouth in the next few years.

In total nearly £12m has been set aside to pay for works for various schemes to ease traffic and improve public transport.

Norfolk county council’s infrastructure officer Ian Parke told the borough’s transport steering group now this is the moment to seize for Great Yarmouth.

“This is an amazing opportunity that doesn’t come along very often. The next financial year is the time that we have to secure a huge amount of capital works.”

Some £3.3m has been allocated to congestion relieving schemes.

A stand alone improvement has been designed for the Fullers Hill Roundabout and this will be implemented in 2017/18 and could see two lanes for turning right from North Quay.

Improvements are also being developed for other key junctions bearing in mind the impacts of the Third River Crossing and Highways England’s A47 and A12 junction improvement schemes.

Some £2.21m has been set aside for a scheme that improves the gateway from the railway station to the Market Place via The Conge. An overall scheme has been devised which accords with the emerging Masterplan and drawings have been prepared for consultation purposes. Proposals are also in hand to fund further improvements to Vauxhall bridge to bring the parallel span into use.

This bid was successful and in total some £2.21m has been allocated to a transport scheme that accords with the two items shown above and to those timescales. Not meeting this spending profile could result in losing funding.

Additionally it has been agreed that some £50k from the Growth Fund would be put up as match funding for a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid for £500k for renovating the second parallel span of Vauxhall Bridge and bringing it into pedestrian and cycle use.

There would also be the opportunity for potential commercial use on the span like a small café.
