Traffic is at a standstill in Great Yarmouth due to a bridge fault.

The Haven Bridge has experienced numerous faults over recent weeks and the latest problem is causing long queues to form on the South Quay and Pasteur Road, with reports of tailbacks as far as the Victoria Road roundabout in Gorleston.

Pedestrian access was initially blocked off as the bridge was not fully lowered and one cyclist said he had been waiting 45 minutes to cross the bridge.

The bridge has since been reopened and closed to pedestrians intermittently.

An engineer at the bridge said: “We are not sure exactly what the problem is, it is an old, old bridge. We are trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.”

Harbour masters, Peel Ports, have previously said that diagnosing faults and replacing parts for the 90-year-old bridge can be challenging.
