PARENTS and grandparents proudly looked on as trees were planted in Great Yarmouth's Bure Park on Saturday to celebrate babies born in the borough over the past year.

Yarmouth Mayor Tony Smith wielded a spade at the annual Trees for Life ceremony that sees a mix of native British trees planted at different sites around the borough.

The families who turned up at the riverside park helped to plant 120 trees, a mixture of silver birch, oak, hazel and pine.

Jade Tungate, who planted a tree for her three-month-old son Junior Mayer, said she heard about the scheme through a friend and thought it would be a lovely ongoing gesture for her son.

“I'm looking forward to taking Junior to Bure Park for walks in the summer and watching his tree grow,” she said.

“It's lovely to see trees planted instead of buildings going up and is great for the environment.”
