GHOST-HUNTERS can join the professionals when Great Yarmouth's ancient Tolhouse comes under serious investigation tomorrow night.

Ghost guru Ian John Shillito - former psychic on Living TV's Most Haunted and founder of London Paranormal - is organising the hunt as part of a nationwide programme of events aimed at supporting historic properties, local history and community through ghost-themed activities.

He and his team are giving intrepid ghost-hunters a unique chance to descend on the Tolhouse in the hope that they too will witness supernatural activity. Brave souls will hold a ghost watch at the property from 9pm-4am.

Mr Shillito said: “Great Yarmouth has a fascinating history of smugglers, witches, pirates and murderers and many of them passed through, the doors of the Tolhouse. Has the centuries of supposed suffering left a tainted tide line in the form of a residual haunting? I look forward to this preliminary vigil to find out.”

Once a former medieval merchant's house, the Tolhouse was home to the civil government in Great Yarmouth for nearly six centuries. From as early as 1306, the court met at the Tolhouse.

Many criminals were incarcerated at the gaol before public execution. In 1875, conditions at the Tolhouse were thought to be too dire to hold long-term prisoners and it finally closed in 1880. It now runs as a museum.
