Because among the line-up of small, quality, events planned for Great Yarmouth's Elizabethan House Museum, in South Quay, is an evening entitled Undressing Mr Darcy. It involves a close look at a Regency gentleman's attire with a real life man to model them - sparking images of a drenched Colin Firth whose version of Mr Darcy triggered a national swoon.
The events mark a new era of entertainment in the life of the 16th century merchants house which kicks off on Saturday night with an acclaimed one-man show.
Taking as his starting point the atmosphere of the wood-panelled conspiracy room Robert Lloyd Parry will read two ghost stories by M R James.
Over a century after publication James' ghost stories are said to be among the most admired supernatural tales in the English language so the advice is to listen carefully to experience “pleasing terror.”
According to Metro Lloyd Parry's beautifully modulated performance is perfectly judged to send an enjoyable chill down the spine.
The show features Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad - a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast considered by many to be the author's masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.
Organiser Jonathan Tooke said the aim was to bring the museum in line with other National Trust properties. “Its about putting on small quality events giving the people of Great Yarmouth new opportunities to enjoy the Elizabethan House in the evening.”
Future events will focus on Victorian dining and entertainment including singing and a magic lantern show.
Suitable for ages 13 and above. The performance lasts approx 100 minutes including interval.
