Untaxed vehicles taken off streets

MORE than half-a-dozen untaxed vehicles have now been removed from roads in Great Yarmouth as part of a car clearing partnership between the borough council and police.
Despite a hard hitting car crushing demonstration in the Market Place last month - aimed at reminding drivers what could happen to their vehicle if it is not taxed - the partnership is not short of cars to clear from the borough's roads.
A two-day inspection in south Yarmouth saw seven cars taken off the road and it will cost their owners at least £80 to recover them.
That price goes up to £160 once the vehicle has been held for 24 hours and there is an additional fee of £15 per day, plus a surety fee of £120 which is returnable on production of a valid tax disc.
Car Clear co-ordinator Graham Carpenter said: “We also respond to information from members of the public who highlight where cars have been abandoned, or are not displaying tax discs.
“The problem with untaxed cars is that they are often also not insured or don't have an MOT - which means they could be potentially un-roadworthy.
