Van man admits dumping rubbish

Following a Mercury appeal the driver of a red Sherpa van who dumped rubbish on the doorstep of a charity has held his hand up to the offence.

The guilty man saw the article and contacted Michael Jeal at First Move to explain that he had borrowed a friend's van and left packaging and an old sofa outside the property last month.

“We have the person's contact details,” said Peter Astle Great Yarmouth Borough Council's environmental health service manager. “We are currently looking into the matter and will be talking to the person concerned.

“I would like to thank the Mercury for the part they played in this - it just shows the vital part the press can play in helping to combat the problem of fly-tipping in the borough.”

The appeal for information came after two men were caught on CCTV dumping a light green two-seater sofa and packaging from a fridge/freezer on doorstep of First Move Furnishaid, a charity which recycles furniture. Mr Jeal said: “We frequently find rubbish dumped at the entrance and we then have to pay to have it removed.”
