THE severe weather conditions has made vehicle access to many roads extremely difficult and affected many of the borough council's refuse collections.

The refuse crews are continuing to work but are currently about half a day behind for the majority of their rounds. However, the Northern parishes, Martham, Winterton and Hemsby are worst affected and collections in those areas are cancelled today.

A council spokeswoman said: “We are asking that residents in all areas leave their bins out as usual and we will get to them when conditions improve. All crews are scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, collections and additional support is planned. Weather forecasts do predict very low temperatures for the weekend and this could have a detrimental effect on these planned collections.

“We are hoping to get back to normal as soon as possible although recovery of missed collection will prioritise on black bins which could contain perishable and rotting waste.

“We are aware of all bins that have not been emptied and therefore residents do not need to inform us of missed collections. We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during this difficult period. Our crews are working hard, in often sub-zero temperatures, to recover the situation.”

Residents are asked to go to the website www.great-yarmouth.gov.uk which will be updated with further information.
