NEXT Saturday sees Great Yarmouth's fifth annual Night of Museums providing an evening of great entertainment and celebration.

The previous four years been so successful the event has been extended by a further half an hour and will now run from 5.30pm to 10pm.

The event offers free admission to the five main museums and heritage venues in the town offering a saving of more than 60 for a family of four.

The Tolhouse, Elizabethan House, Nelson Museum, award winning Time & Tide Museum and English Heritage's Row 111 House, will be opening their doors for free.

The Night of Museums is the perfect time to visit the Tolhouse. Visitors can experience the eerie atmosphere of the cells below the hall where pirates, suspected witches, fortune tellers and thieves were all banged up.

Meet the Victorian gaoler Solomon Allies and hear the medieval sounds of Sweet Harmony and have a go at brass rubbing.

At English Heritage's Row 111 the house is being made ready for post-war celebrations and the home-coming of loved ones from the front line.

Visitors can make traditional decorations and take a look at what food was available to the families that lived in the house during the days of rationing.

Wartime sketches from Oriel Specialist College GCSE expressive arts and drama students will be displayed.

At Time and Tide entertainment will be brought to life with fun circus activities, knot tying, music with the Silver Darlings Caf open too.

At the Nelson Museum visitors can try some sailors' games, take a look below decks and get a sense of what it was like at sea for months on end and why making their own entertainment was so important.

At the Elizabethan House Museum visitors will be able to explore the original rooms which take on a completely different look of an evening, try on historical costumes and meet some of the people who have lived in the house over the years.

New for 2010 will be the outside entertainment taking place in the car park area between the Nelson Museum and the Row 111 House.

The area will be set aside for the Norwich Early Dance Group who will be providing demonstrations of 18th century dancing and music and encouraging onlookers to join in and have a go themselves. The dancing demonstrations start 6pm.

Refreshments include vintage van ice cream seller and hog roast.

Making it around all five venues in the evening is a must for anyone wishing to enter the Night of Museums prize draw.

Visitors can pick up a prize draw entry sheet and answer one simple question at each museum.

Forms will be entered into a draw, with a top prize of a fantastic Heritage Quarter Pass as well as a selection of runner up prizes.

Simon Tansley from English Heritage said: “We are very excited about this years event; last year saw visitor number more than double on the previous year so we are expecting great things again this year.

“The event has become a real highlight on the towns' cultural calendar and it's a great opportunity for the local community and visitors to the town to enjoy these fascinating sites.”
