A significant relationship for Great Yarmouth celebrated its diamond anniversary last weekend.

Visitors from the town’s French twin town of Rambouillet came to town to mark the 60th anniversary of the twinning.

Ramboillet mayor Marc Robert was among 57 people to cross the Channel for the weekend’s festivities, as the relationship was celebrated by representatives from both towns.

The visitors were treated to visits to the sea front, promenade and some of the town’s key attractions, as well as a procession and ceremonial re-signing of the Twinning Charter.

They also arrived on the perfect weekend, as they were able to take in the sights and sounds of the Out There Festival.

Laura Goodman, civic events officer for Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: “The weekend went wonderfully well - our visitors particularly enjoyed walking on the promenade and visiting the Sea Life Centre - things that we are used to but they don’t have. Everybody had a whale of a time.

“There has a been a lot of work building the relationship over the last 60 years and it’s important the people of Great Yarmouth can feel the benefit of it.”

The twinning was originally agreed in 1956, with the aim of making it easier for people and children of both towns to get to know and understand each other better.

Mrs Goodman added: “There have been so many friendships formed through the twinning over the years and we have a fantastic relationship.

“It’s a really nice thing to have.”
