THE bid to set a new world record in Great Yarmouth for the most number of people dressed as the character Where's Wally received the seal of approval from the books' publisher this week.

Walkers Books spokesman Jo Humpries-Davis said she was thrilled the town was having another go at beating the record it fell just short of last year.

The previous attempt was so near, yet so far, with 901 people donning the red and white striped t-shirt and bobble hat despite more than 1,200 costumes being sold.

As well as planning to feature news of the event on their website, Walker Books arranged for author Martin Handford's agent to supply the Town Centre Partnership with Wally images for posters and the website promoting the record attempt on what is being dubbed Bank Wally-Day - Monday, May 31.

Registrations to take part in the event and sales of the additional 1,000 Wally costumes for people taking part have been brisk, particularly for children's sizes.

To try and avoid people buying the costumes, which cost 6, and not taking part in the record attempt they will only be available to collect on the day.

According to Guinness World Records the current record is 1,052 people achieved by Rutgers University at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, on April 2, 2009.

A 55ft high Wally banner recently received a clean up and lick of paint before being suspended from the Market Place on the big day.

Participants need to register and get a ticket, which is being equally split between two charities: MacMillan Cancer Care and the Have a Heart Appeal which gives money to local children's charities.

The record attempt is also being supported by Heart FM.
