LIFETIME gardener Wally Welton has hung up his wellies at the age of 97.

Mr Welton has tended his allotment on Crab Lane in Gorleston for 50 years and at an emotional farewell gathering with many of his fellow allotment holders, he was presented with a gardening clock and his favourite brew – Guinness.

Site secretary Ronnie Huggins and chairman Jack Dalimore both praised the contribution had made to the site.

Recently Wally won an award for the best kept plot at the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Allotment Association’s annual awards ceremony. But he will still be keeping an eye on his younger friends, aiming to drop in now and then for the odd cup of tea.
