Coastguards were called to the beach at Hemsby on Wednesday after a dead porpoise washed up on the shore.

The 1.4m long mammal had a large chunk of flesh missing by its tail leading to speculation it may have been killed by a propeller or attacked by a larger creature such as a shark. It was found 50m from the Hemsby Gap and it was not known what sex the porpoise was.

Jenni Cotton, Yarmouth watch officer, said the porpoise corpse was still in a fairly decent condition and that it had been sent to the Natural History Museum in London so a post mortem examination can be carried out.

She said: “It could have been a propeller or attacked by a larger predator.”
