A website has been set up to help a Broadland community buy and run their popular village pub.

People in Upton hope to raise 150,000 by the end of the month so they can keep the pints pouring at their favourite drinking den- the White Horse.

If the money is found then villagers hope to then go on to form a committee or a company to try and buy the pub and make sure it remains a vital community hub.

As part of the drive to secure enough pledges and donations a Help Save Our Pub website has been set up at www.whitehorseupton.co.uk

The White Horse in Chapel Lane is on the market for 350,000 and has been a focal point in Upton since 1872.

Its landlord of four decades Ray 'Winkle' Norman put it up for sale a year ago as he plans to retire but there has been a lack of interest from any buyers as on ongoing concern - leading to fears it may eventually be closed for good or bought by a housing developer.

In March villagers set up a campaign to buy the pub and allow Mr Norma to retire in peace with people being asked to make 500 pledges.

It is hoped that a manager and chef would be employed or a husband and wife team would take on the pub on a profit share basis and there is talk of expanding the pub by setting up a community shop or caf with internet access.

Kevin Cotton, a save our pub campaigner, said: “Hopefully the website will help us to buy the White Horse and ensure it remains at the heart of Upton.”

As well as clicking on the Help Save Our Pub weblink on www.whitehorseupton.co.uk, people can send their 500 pledges by the end of month by writing to Gordon McFadyen at 32 Marsh Rd, Upton, Norwich, NR13 6BS
