At around 12.45pm on Wednesday, January 3, a member of the public alerted the coastguard after discovering what has been described as a “mortar-type device”.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: “We were first alerted to a suspicious item on Tuesday evening, however, it did not surface. It was then found again this afternoon, having washed up on the beach.”

The Ministry of Defence has been alerted to the find and a bomb disposal team from Portsmouth has been despatched to deal with it.

The coastguard spokesman added: “It must have been on the bed for a considerable amount of time and therefore the possibility of it going off are quite slim.

“However, we must urge members of the public to avoid going down onto the beach until it is dealt with.”
