LUCKY pupils from the Woodlands Middle School in Bradwell have been able to experience first hand what many of the great sculptors throughout history have achieved by bringing their own thoughts and designs into the three dimensional world.
LUCKY pupils from the Woodlands Middle School in Bradwell have been able to experience first hand what many of the great sculptors throughout history have achieved by bringing their own thoughts and designs into the three dimensional world.
Internationally recognised sculptress Julia Cake set up a workshop to introduce stone, clay and bronze sculpture to the 21 children over a six-week period.
The children learned about the many stone types available from different countries and how to choose stone based on their attributes of colour, vein formation and their ability to be polished, making them more or less suitable for sculpting.
Each of the children had the chance to work with marble sent from the very mountains of Carara Italy as used by Michaelangelo.
The children cut ground and polished their own pieces of marble enabling them to appreciate the magnificence of historic hand produced sculptures in an entirely different way.
The workshop concluded with each of the children sculpting their own individual fruits in clay and unanimously deciding to take these fruits home to display in mum's fruit basket to remind them to eat healthily.
