Work will begin on Monday to install smart traffic lights at the bottleneck Gapton Hall roundabout on the A12 in Great Yarmouth.

Detector loops under the road surface will measure traffic flows on the approaches to the junction prompting the lights to change as necessary. The work is expected to be completed by the end of March.

The aim is to tackle congestion and improve safety at the main road junction into the town.

Roger Chenery, Highways Agency project manager, said: “The Highways Agency is committed to reducing congestion on the roads, and this 850,000 scheme will help by allowing the Gapton Hall junction to operate much more efficiently in the future.”

To minimise disruption to drivers, the work has been planned to take place overnight between 9pm and 6am when traffic flows are at their lightest.

To ensure safety, a 30mph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the scheme.

Diversions will be necessary when the roundabout is closed for resurfacing work with traffic diverted via clearly signed diversion routes.

The Highways Agency's work will also include some changes to the approaches to the roundabout on Gapton Hall Road and Pasteur Road to make manoeuvring around it easier as well as the removal of signal control at Gapton Hall Road.
