CANTLEY Primary School held World War II days on June 7 and 8.Several local people spoke about life as a child in wartime and how sleeping in the underground and swapping shrapnel could be quite exciting but being sent away as an evacuee was not so much fun.
CANTLEY Primary School held World War II days on June 7 and 8.
Several local people spoke about life as a child in wartime and how sleeping in the underground and swapping shrapnel could be quite exciting but being sent away as an evacuee was not so much fun.
Local historian, Graeme Simmonds, talked about conditions in the war and showed the children gas masks and how many sweets you would get in a week on rations.
On the second day the children and staff dressed in 1940s costumes and held a street party in the playground with everyone using their own ration book to buy food and drink.
Before the food there were games and dancing, 1940s style.
To add to the authenticity one family arrived in an original 1931 Austin saloon car.
