Wroughton children's Big Tidy Up

The children on the School Council at Wroughton Junior School took part in The Big Tidyup campaign on Friday. The children donned their Tidy Apron, put on their rubber gloves and spent an hour clearing all the rubbish from the premises of their school and also the site at Wroughton Infant School.

The school is currently in the process of registering as an 'Eco School' and is taking part in several initiatives to achieve their status.

Linked into this is the school Science Mark. Lots of eco-friendly events have an element of science about them. To this end the children will be giving an assembly to the whole school about the rubbish they collected on the school site, how it effects the environment and how the pupils themselves can have a direct impact on reducing rubbish and waste at school.

School office manager Liz Simon said: "We already take several measures to improve our footprint. We have cycle training to help encourage children and parents to cycle to school, through our school Travel Plan the recommendation for better cycle paths has been implemented through the council and the cycle paths are nearly finished. We recycle all of our paper and the kitchen also recycle oil that is used for cooking. Our next step will be concentrating on energy, how we use it in school and what we are wasting. We, as a school, are trying to become more economical, not just for the environments sake but also for economic reasons. The children hopefully will take what they learn at school and implement in some small way in their own homes. "

The school also has a small vegetable plot and is looking for anyone who would like to help move the school forward with regard to growing vegetables and showing the children how to maintain a small plot.
