Gilfreds restaurant on Regent Road remained cordoned off yesterday as forensic experts searched for clues into how a fire started in its kitchen area on Monday afternoon.
Restaurant owner Fred Bennett and his wife had to be rescued from the first floor of the building by firefighters using a ladder as large plumes of black smoke rose into the air.
It is thought the fire, which damaged the restaurant's kitchen and left several floors smoke logged, may have been caused by oil in the kitchen.
The fire started at about 4.15pm and led to eight fire engines being called out to deal with it.
