PLANS to restore and transform Yarmouth's historic King Street area received a �2m boost. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) money will be used to repair the dilapidated St George's Chapel and restore 30 properties in the area, including 18th century merchant houses.
PLANS to restore and transform Yarmouth's historic King Street area received a �2m boost.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) money will be used to repair the dilapidated St George's Chapel and restore 30 properties in the area, including 18th century merchant houses.
Yesterday's lottery money allocation is part of a �8m regeneration project for King Street, which has already received considerable financial support for the government and Yarmouth Borough Council.
The ambitious project could see St George's Chapel re-open as an arts and community centre and the creation of a vibrant cultural quarter just off the town centre.
Yarmouth was one of eight towns that found out yesterday that they were successful in applying for a share of �10m of HLF grants.
In 2001 the resort was given �2m by HLF to carry extensive regeneration of four conservation areas.
Peter Hardy, executive director of the borough council, said: “We are delighted that Yarmouth has been successful in this competitive national bidding round.
“The HLF has given great support to the town in the past and we are thrilled that this is set to continue.”
