COAST Alive and Norfolk County Council are joining forces on Wednesday to promote healthy and enjoyable walks around Great Yarmouth.

A celebratory event at the Legends Lounge in the Wellesley Recreation Ground (2pm) will mark the first Coast Alive initiative in the area - a series of walks developed in partnership with the council's Health Heritage and Biodiversity Walks project.

The event will begin with a brief ceremony and continue with a walk along one of the routes promoted in a new booklet. The 1.4 mile walk is wheelchair accessible throughout.

The council is producing health, heritage and biodiversity walks booklets for communities right across the county.

Altogether 12 are being produced promoting 150 short circular walks based around county towns.

Aylsham, Thetford, Cromer and Sheringham, Diss and Harleston, Dereham and Downham Market have already benefited from the health walks initiative.

The Great Yarmouth booklet is the first produced in partnership with Coast Alive.

Magne Haugseng, of Coast Alive, said: "This first Coast Alive initiative for Norfolk will be promoting a series of circular walks based around Great Yarmouth, encouraging local people to find their walk to enjoy on a regular basis with friends and family.”

Project officer Carrie Kerry said: “There are some great routes in this collection of walks, to appeal to all interests.

“Walking is so good not just for physical health, but mental health too. Exposure to nature simply makes us feel good-nature is free therapy with no side effects. If there is green vegetation, blue sky and water in a scene, we like it even more. And better still, we can reach all this within a short distance of Yarmouth.”
